Bringing Up Baby

Bringing Up Baby

A nonstop profusion of hilarious calamities, coincidences, and misunderstandings ensue when an accident-prone heiress turns a sheltered scientist's life upside down. Dr. David Huxley (Cary Grant) is a straitlaced paleontologist juggling three important events at once: the arrival of an extremely rare bone needed to complete his brontosaurus skeleton; a meeting to ask for a million dollars for his museum from a wealthy donor; and his impending marriage to the humorless Miss Swallow (Virginia Walker). Into David's life comes Susan (Katharine Hepburn), a free-spirited young woman who seems to bring trouble wherever she goes. Thanks to Susan, David finds himself involved in one ridiculous situation after another, and soon the two are prowling around a country estate looking for the missing dinosaur bone, hunting for a lost pet leopard named Baby, and somehow falling in love. Grant and Hepburn form a sharp-witted and hysterical comic duo, and Howard Hawks directs BRINGING UP BABY with the control of a master,...

Gunga Din

Gunga Din

George Stevens' classic action-comedy stars Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Victor McLaglen as a trio of carousing British army officers in 1890s colonial India. When the telegraph wires to one of the British outposts are found to have been cut, the three friends, Sergeants Cutter (Grant), Ballantine (Fairbanks), and McChesney (McLaglen), are sent to investigate. They encounter the Thugges, a cult of religious extremists intent on driving the British from their land, but are able to repel their attack. After the soldiers return to their posts, Ballantine decides to leave the service and marry his girlfriend, Emmy Stebbins (Joan Fontaine). His friends are horrified by this news, and try to concoct a ruse to keep him in the army. While waiting, the mercenary Cutter, led by Gunga Din--their loyal, native water-bearer, goes into the hills in search of gold. They find that the temple of gold is, in fact, the headquarters of the Thugges, who capture Cutter, but allow Din to escape. Stevens makes good u...

North by Northwest

North by Northwest

NORTH BY NORTHWEST is a suspense thriller that finds Cary Grant in the role of Roger Thornhill, a Manhattan advertising executive mistaken for a spy. Considered by many to be the prototypical pure action movie (creating the template for later James Bond and Indiana Jones films), the film is a cross-country roller-coaster ride with Alfred Hitchcock at the helm. The film is duly famous for several classic and indelible scenes, including the desert biplane encounter and the Mt. Rushmore climax. The original title was THE MAN IN LINCOLN'S NOSE, which was replaced by a reference to a line from William Shakespeare's HAMLET (in which Hamlet says, "I am but mad north-north-west."). The magical combination of Hitchcock and the debonair Grant--who made four wonderful films together--makes NORTH BY NORTHWEST a suspense-filled standout.

When Thornhill finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, the world as he knows it comes to an end. Suddenly danger threatens as the hapless businessman is targe...

To Catch a Thief

To Catch a Thief

A supposedly reformed cat burglar, out to prove himself innocent of a recent crime spree, tries to capture the thief who's terrifying the French Riviera. Cary Grant is devastatingly elegant as the reformed thief, John Robie, and charming enough to attract the attention of the lovely Frances Stevens (Grace Kelly), a wealthy and spoiled American traveling the Riviera with her widowed mother (Jessie Royce Landis). However, things do not begin on a romantic note. Robie is more interested in clearing his name than in pursuing the beautiful American, but the two will not go their separate ways so easily. When Mrs. Stevens has her jewels stolen, the snubbed Frances puts the police on Robie's trail. Now the dashing Robie will have to win the confidence and assistance of Frances if he is to ever set things right. The stars are radiant together, with an entrancing chemistry that sparkles, especially in the impromptu ad-libbed dialogue of the picnic scene. A series of elaborate set pieces combined with dramatic Riv...

Philadelphia Story

Philadelphia Story

THE PHILADELPHIA STORY boasts an incredible cast, but it's Katharine Hepburn's picture in more ways than one. Tracy Lord (Hepburn), a Philadelphia heiress, is about to marry coal-company executive George Kittridge (John Howard). The wedding, promising to be the season's premier event, attracts the attention of magazine publisher Sidney Kidd (Henry Daniell), who sees it as an opportunity to break a story. Spy magazine's Dexter Haven (Cary Grant), Lord's ex-husband, is enlisted to "gain access" to the party, along with top scandal writer Macauley Connor (James Stewart, in an Oscar-winning role). However, the reporter is quickly smitten by the bride's charms--and he's not the only one. The film, based on the play by Phillip Barry, was first a Broadway sensation starring Hepburn, who acquired the screen rights, claimed the starring role, and chose the director, screenwriter, and lead cast. In addition to fine work by Grant and Stewart, notable supporting performances are delivered by Ruth Hussey and Virginia...

That Touch of Mink

That Touch of Mink

Of Doris Day, comedian-pianist Oscar Levant once observed, "I knew her before she was a virgin." Indeed, playing a woman who always says "no" proved quite profitable for the wholesome singer in a series of light comedies in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Here in THAT TOUCH OF MINK, she plays newly unemployed New York secretary Cathy Timberlake, who meets handsome and wealthy business magnate Philip Shayne (Cary Grant) when his car accidentally splatters her dress with mud. Her annoyance about her dress is vaporized by his charm, and she agrees to join him on a business trip to Baltimore. There they attend a baseball game which features amusing appearances by diamond greats Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, and Yogi Berra. They stop for drinks en route to New York, where Philip impresses the young woman by giving a speech at the United Nations. Feeling that he's finally gotten past the necessary preliminaries, he asks Cathy to accompany him to Bermuda, where clearly, he hopes the relationship will reach a new ...

Charade

Charade

Lovely Reggie (Audrey Hepburn) is determined to divorce her wealthy, cold, and closed-mouthed husband, but someone throws him from a train before she gets the chance. Left penniless in Paris with police suspicion resting heavily upon her, Reggie soon realizes she's in serious trouble--her husband stole money from three unscrupulous men, and they want the money back. Charming and amusing Cary Grant, recalling his screwball comedy days while still remaining manly, comes to Reggie's aid. But he too has secrets and hidden loyalties. With the bodies piling up and the money nowhere to be found, Grant and Hepburn dash through Paris toward the startling solution.

Agatha Christie-like in its unexpected twists and colorful characters and shimmering with fun and passion, CHARADE is a suspense gem that deserves to be much better known than it is. The supporting cast, led by Walter Matthau, James Coburn, and George Kennedy, is terrific, the interaction between Hepburn and Grant is an absolute joy, and Stan...

People Will Talk

People Will Talk

A lovely movie featuring Cary Grant in one of his more inscrutable roles as an angel of mercy to the sick, recalling his work in THE BISHOP'S WIFE. PEOPLE WILL TALK focuses on Dr. Praetorius, a nontraditional doctor whose patients and medical students love him, while his success spurs the jealousy of fellow doctors, including teaching rival Shunderson. Content with his life, the doctor is thrown a curve ball when a beautiful but unmarried mother-to-be confirms her pregnancy at his clinic, then tries to shoot herself to avoid shaming her father. Taking unconventional healing a step farther, Praetorius marries her; their happiness is disrupted when Shunderson's mysterious past is brought into the light, perhaps to topple Praetorius's reputation and career. Weaving in the theme that doctors should treat the whole person, not only the disease, PEOPLE WILL TALK graces the pantheon of comic, romantic dramas; it is based on the play DR. PRAETORIUS, by Curt Goetz.

Indiscreet

Indiscreet

Wealthy American Philip (Cary Grant) and famous actress Anne (Ingrid Bergman) meet just as Anne insists that all the best men have already been taken. Though Philip is taken, Anne can't resist their instant attraction and electricity. But the rather big, and unexpected, secret Philip hides from his new love threatens to spoil everything.

When they teamed up again in INDISCREET--more than a decade after their romance in Hitchcock's NOTORIOUS--Grant and Bergman were no longer shiny-bright young stars. (Grant had been in films for 30 years and a screen idol for 20, while Bergman had made her name in CASABLANCA 15 years earlier.) But Grant's salt-and-pepper hair and Bergman's knowing eyes give their turbulent relationship the weight, subtlety, and wisdom a younger couple couldn't provide. Aided by director Stanley Donen's stylish direction and knowledge of what raises a mundane romance to the level of classic, Bergman and Grant make INDISCREET an intelligent, and enjoyable, tale about the bumpy ro...

His Girl Friday

His Girl Friday

In Howard Hawks's screwball masterpiece adapted from the stage play THE FRONT PAGE by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, star reporter Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell), once married to suave editor Walter Burns (Cary Grant), plans to leave the stressful newspaper world behind and marry a boring insurance agent. Walter won't reveal his feelings for Hildy but tries to keep her from leaving by convincing her to cover one last story, a politically motivated execution. When the convict manages to escape, chaos breaks loose, and Hildy finds herself working alongside Walter to break the story wide open.

HIS GIRL FRIDAY is a loose, freewheeling gem featuring some of the fastest dialogue ever filmed (peppered with inspired ad-libbing by Grant and Russell, each appearing at comedic high points in their careers). Hawks, who changed the original story of two newspapermen into a battle of the sexes, keeps the frenetic action careening forward and allows a few slim but luminous notes of genuine affection to ...

Holiday

Holiday

Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant team up in this classic George Cukor comedy about love that finally finds its mark. Johnny (Grant) has just met the girl of his dreams, so he proposes; she happily accepts. However, he soon discovers that his lovely bride-to-be, Julia (Doris Nolan), comes from a wealthy Park Avenue family, with a father who likes to make all the decisions and to whom she seems incapable of defying. Her unconventional sister, Linda (Hepburn), knows she wants something different from a mapped-out life; she also discovers she's falling in love with Johnny. Grant's effervescent performance is timeless, and his onscreen chemistry with Hepburn electric. Based on the 1928 play by Philip Barry, and the second time the story was adapted to the screen, this version established the rules for intelligent romantic comedies and provided a template from which the deft Cukor could further expand.

Suspicion

Suspicion

Joan Fontaine's fabulous performance as a woman who grows to fear the man she loves anchors this compelling story in which Alfred Hitchcock shows his love for playing with the audience's expectations. Perfectly cast is the dashing Cary Grant, whose lovable and charming persona is on full display while being completely transformed through Hitchcock's eerie camera work and visual innuendo--to the point that the simplest gesture takes on a new and malevolent aspect. SUSPICION lives up to its title's promise, weaving dread and ambiguity into a potent psychological net. Fontaine is the beautiful daughter of a wealthy, landed English family. Grant is the lighthearted and irreverent wastrel who charms Fontaine into elopement and succeeds in introducing the young woman to the pleasures of a more carefree outlook on life. However, as Fontaine discovers the legacy of Grant's carefree ways--his numerous debts and pursuers--she begins to suspect a darker past and must confront the horrible implications this has for ...
