My Baby Don't Wear No Shoes by C.J. Chenier

My Baby Don't Wear No Shoes by C.J. Chenier

Personnel: C.J. Chenier (vocals, accordion, alto saxophone); Harry Hypolite (vocals, guitar); Selwyn Cooper (guitar); Wayne Burns (bass); Joseph Edwards (drums); Cleveland Chenier (rubboard). Recorded at Bay Records, Berkeley, California. Includes liner notes by Lee Hidebrand. This is the real deal, obviously. C.J. is the son of Clifton Chenier, who is to zydeco what James Brown is to soul--i.e., the godfather--and the music here is very traditionalist and stripped down (sometimes, as in "Blue Flame Blues" it dispenses with the bass altogether). Chenier has nonetheless lived in the real world enough to be influenced by non-zydeco sources. His "I'm Coming Home," for example, owes a major debt to Sam Cooke's "Bring It on Home," and his "She's My Woman," would be unthinkable without the R&B standard "Turn on Your Love Light." Even more far afield, guitarist Harry Hypolite contributes a "Harry's Big Mama Blues" in which he appears to be channeling the ghost of Howlin' Wolf.

Blast From the Bayou by Wayne Toups & Zydecajun

Blast From the Bayou by Wayne Toups & Zydecajun

Personnel: Wayne Toups (vocals, accordion); Wade Richard (electric guitar, background vocals); Jim Horn, Michael Haynes, Jack D. Hale, Sr. (horns); Rick Lagneaux (piano, organ, background vocals); Mark Miller (bass) Troy Gaspard (drums). Recorded at Master Trak Enterprises, Crowley, Louisiana and Digital Recorders, Nashville, Tennessee. Wayne Toups aspires to a sound that combines the two traditions of Louisiana French music, as is indicated by the name of his band. And indeed, it is a fusion of the more tradional Cajun style and the more African-American, rhythm & blues-oriented zydeco sound. The band uses a Hammond B3 organ in addition to the accordion (like Buckwheat Zydeco and the Ils Sont Partis band.) The songs are mostly sung in English, with a smattering of French to keep the disc authentic. But Wayne Toups is definitely reaching out to a broader audience than most zydeco or Cajun artists. Toups attempts a couple of covers--a version of "Tell It Like It Is," and Van Morrison's "Tupelo Honey." He ...

Zydeco Giant by Beau Jocque/Zydeco Hi-Rollers

Zydeco Giant by Beau Jocque/Zydeco Hi-Rollers

Beau Jocque & The Zydeco Hi-Rollers: Beau Jocque (vocals, accordion); Ray Mouton, Kent Pierre Augustine (guitar); Mike Lockett (keyboards); Chuck "Chucky" Bush (bass, background vocals); Eddie Bodin (drums); Wilfred "Caveman" Pierre (rubboard, background vocals). Recorded at Master Trak Studios, Crowley, Louisiana. Includes liner notes by Ben Sandmel. It opens with a funkified cover of the O'Kaysion's 1968 "I'm a Girl Watcher," sung--leeringly--in a basso of almost Beefheartian dimensions, and ends with a high-tech disco remix. In other words, this is NOT your father's zydeco album. Which is not to say that Beau Jocques can't get rootsy when he wants too; the instrumental workout "The Second Line" and the charming "Pine Point Trail Ride" (sung in French) are as traditional as it gets. Mostly, though, the music here is contemporary R&B and blues (a B. B. King-esque "Rock Me, Baby") with an accordion up front providing Cajun seasoning.

The Crazy Cajun Recordings by Doug Kershaw

The Crazy Cajun Recordings by Doug Kershaw

Personnel includes: Doug Kershaw, Rusty Kershaw. Obscurities and previously unreleased tracks by the original Ragin' Cajun, recorded (approximately) in the late '50s to the early '70s (i.e., before his crossover from the country charts). As might be expected, these songs are all over the stylistic map; there's rockabilly ("Hey Mae"), country reggae (a nifty cover of Johnny Nash's "Hold Me Tight"), a big production with strings ("You Done Me Wrong"), and some stuff that's just plain weird (the echo drenched "Louisian Sun"). Somehow, however, it all seems to cohere, and Kershaw exudes boundless energy throughout.

Pretty Runs Out * by Amanda Shaw

Pretty Runs Out * by Amanda Shaw

For her second long-player, New Orleans's own Amanda Shaw seamlessly mixes a wide array of genres including Dixie Chicks-esque roots pop, steamy roadhouse corkers, and traditional Zydeco and Cajun stomps. The results are an eclectic but affecting listen, and prove that when backed by her band of industry pros, the Cute Boys, this dynamic bandleader and teenage fiddle prodigy can do anything she pleases. The thrills are many, but when Shaw's fiddle runs lead her band through "McGee's Medley" and the penultimate medley of traditional Louisiana reels, all bets are off.

Best Of Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys * by Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys

Best Of Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys * by Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys

Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys: David Greely (vocals, fiddle); Sam Broussard (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Brazos Huval (bass instrument); Kevin Dugas (drums). Personnel: Steve Riley (vocals, accordion). After two decades of roots-rockin' ferocity, Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys released this comprehensive two-disc set of highlights from their distinguished career. Obviously well-schooled in strictly traditional Cajun forms--witness their spot-on readings of standards such as "La Danse De Mardi Gras"--Riley and Co. are most famous for reinvigorating those styles for a modern audience. These tracks cook with drums, electricity, production sheen, and intense tempos. Call it New Hot Cajun, and then two-step your cares away.

La Chanson Perdue by Geno Delafose & French Rockin' Boogie

La Chanson Perdue by Geno Delafose & French Rockin' Boogie

Geno Delafose & French Rockin' Boogie: Geno Delafose (vocals, accordion, piano, drums); Joseph "Cookie" Chavis (guitar); Steve Nash (rubboard); Germaine Jack (drums, rubboard). Additional personnel: Christine Balfa (acoustic guitar); Dirk Powell, Steve Riley (fiddle); Scott Billington (background vocals). Recorded at Ultrasonic Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana in January 1998. Includes liner notes by Scott Billington. Son of John Delafose, frontman for the legendary Eunice Playboys, Geno Delfafose plays Creole and Cajun music at its most hypnotic. In songs like "Je Vas Jamais La Voir Encore," "Bernadette," and "Tite Monde," his loping accordion riffs seem to bend time back on itself; like aural Mobius strips. Most of these songs are in French, and most are traditional, but on "Une Autre Soir Ennuyante," Delafose bangs out an impassioned '60s-style soul ballad, and later he changes the pace again with "Save the Last Dance For Me," giving the old Drifters ballad a swampy Louisiana patina that sounds eminent...
