Kelton. Recording information: The Castle, Franklin, TN; Wedgewood Sound, Nashville, TN; The Sound Station, Nashville, TN. The Hits [Limited] by Garth Brooks

Personnel includes: Garth Brooks (vocals); Mark Casstevens, Johnny Christopher (acoustic guitar); Pat Alger (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Chris Leuzinger (electric guitar); Bruce Bouton (steel guitar, background vocals); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Rob Hajacos (fiddle, background vocals); Sam Bush (fiddle, mandolin, background vocals); Terry McMillan (harmonica); Bobby Wood (piano, keyboards); Mike Chapman (bass, background vocals); Edgar Meyer (bass); Milton Sledge (drums, percussion). Recorded at Jack's Tracks Recording Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Garth Brooks. It is almost redundant to have the words "Garth Brooks" and "THE HITS" on the same album cover because this country music phenom is synonymous with the term "hit." After selling a gazillion records and topping the country singles chart, Brooks' "best of" collection has brought him to the peak of the pop album chart as well. Everything is in place on THE HITS. Included are the anthems ("Ain't Goin' Down," "Standing Ou...

Kerosene by Miranda Lambert

Kerosene by Miranda Lambert

Personnel: Miranda Lambert; Eric Darken, Glenn Worf, Jay Joyce, Jim Hoke, Joey Huffman, Mando Saenz, Randy Scruggs, Richard Bennett, Russ Pahl, Hank Singer, Mike Wrucke, Natalie Hemby, Buddy Miller, Chad Cromwell. Recording information: East Iris, Nashville, Tennessee; Omni Sound, Nashville, Tennessee (2004). Many contestants on AMERICAN IDOL and similar TV shows go on to greater success, but due to their relative lack of experience, often have a hard time finding their niche. Not Miranda Lambert--when KEROSENE was released in 2005, the NASHVILLE STAR third-place winner was barely out of her teens, but she had already spent years honing her craft in bars. In addition to being a confident vocalist and strong-willed businessperson, Lambert is a crafty songwriter whose work is easily on par with that of Nashville veterans twice her age. The title track is a pounding, attitude-filled country-rocker reminiscent of John Cougar Mellencamp's "Rain on the Scarecrow." (That this diminutive young blonde woman can s...

C'Mon! * by Keith Anderson

C'Mon! * by Keith Anderson

Personnel: Keith Anderson (guitar, acoustic guitar); Mike Johnson, Russ Pahl (steel guitar); Daniel Myrick, David Lee Murphy, Jeffrey Steele, Phil Sanders (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Chip Matthews. The second album by country singer Keith Anderson, and his first for the Columbia label, C'MON! showcases the burly Oklahoma native's knack for rock-influenced modern country. Originally a Music Row staff songwriter who has penned hits for Big and Rich, Gretchen Wilson, and the duo of Garth Brooks and George Jones, Anderson has developed a wry, easygoing style best exemplified by the title track and "Somebody Needs A Hug," though the heartfelt ballad "I Still Miss You" makes a fine first single.

Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw

Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw

Personnel: Tim McGraw (vocals); Darran Smith (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Bob MInner (acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin); Denny Hemingson (electric guitar, slide guitar, steel guitar, baritone guitar, dobro); Dean Brown (mandolin, fiddle); Jeff McMahon (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Wurlitzer piano, Hammond b-3 organ, synthesizer); John Marcus (bass instrument); Billy Mason (drums); David Dunkley (percussion); Faith Hill, Brett Warren (background vocals). Recording information: Allaire, Shokan, New York. Country superstar Tim McGraw surely needs no apologists; the Louisiana-born singer, who's racked up millions of record sales and married country diva Faith Hill, is practically a force of nature. However, there is a misconception of McGraw as just a high-gloss hat act, a notion that a close listen to LIVE LIKE YOU WERE DYING should dispel. For one thing, while almost all of his peers record with the same pool of Nashville studio hotshots, McGraw continues to work with his longtime band, the Dancehall...

Martin (keyboards, background vocals); Joe Chemay (bass); Lonnie Wilson (drums); Dennis Wilson, John Wesley Ryles, Pamela Rose, Mary Anne Kennedy, Vicki Hampton, Ashley Cleveland, Herb Perderson, Deryl Dodd, Bret Beavers (background vocals). Poducers: Ed Seay, Martina McBride, Paul Worley. Recorded at The Money Pit, Nashville, Tennessee. "Independence Day" was nominated for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards. 5th Gear by Brad Paisley

5th Gear by Brad Paisley

Highlighted by the smash first single, "Ticks," a goofy-sexy ode to nudity al fresco, Brad Paisley's FIFTH GEAR maintains his string of albums neatly balanced between light pop-oriented material and more traditional country. The latter is best exemplified by the twangy guitar instrumental "Throttleneck," the reverent "When We All Get To Heaven," and the tuneful "Bigger Fish To Fry," featuring guest vocals by Vince Gill, Bill Anderson, and Little Jimmy Dickens. Elsewhere, a lovely ballad duet with Carrie Underwood, "Oh Love," keeps an eye to Nashville's present as well as its past. As on most of Paisley's albums, the main lyrical topic, even more than the usual love songs, is what it means to be a man in contemporary America: "I'm Still A Guy" is perhaps the most obvious song on the topic, but the country rocker "Mr. Policeman," the wry character study "Online" (a song about Internet personas at odds with reality), and the surprisingly philosophical opener "All I Wanted Was A Car" flirt with the concept a...

Precious Memories by Alan Jackson

Precious Memories by Alan Jackson

Alan Jackson: Alan Jackson (vocals, guitar); Brent Mason (acoustic guitar); Gary Prim (piano, organ); Keith Stegall (piano); John Wesley Ryles, Melodie Crittenden (background vocals). On 2006's PRECIOUS MEMORIES, country superstar Alan Jackson ventures into gospel territory, offering up a set of warm and inviting faith-themed songs. These spare tracks feature no percussion and rely almost solely on piano and acoustic guitar, allowing the focus to remain on Jackson's resonant vocals and the songs' devoutly Christian lyrics. Although praising Jesus is clearly the core of this album, the beautifully minimalist renderings of spiritual classics are so soothing and pleasant that the disc's appeal is sure to extend to fans of Jackson's secular music, particularly on "Softly and Tenderly," which is enhanced by gentle organ lines, and "I'll Fly Away," here given a light, jaunty bluegrass feel. The resulting atmosphere evokes images of the Georgia-born singer/guitarist sitting in on a friendly, open-air church ser...

Greatest Hits by Tim McGraw

Greatest Hits by Tim McGraw

Personnel includes: Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Patty Loveless, Chris Rodriguez (vocals). Producers: James Stroud, Tim McGraw, Byron Gallimore, Faith Hill. Normally, greatest hits packages include a few new tracks as bait for longtime fans who already own every CD by the artist. Tim McGraw's GREATEST HITS collection isn't one of those, but it is the perfect place to start for the casual fan who's heard and enjoyed McGraw's songs on the radio. GREATEST HITS does an admirable job of collecting McGraw's biggest successes since his 1994 breakthrough with the very politically incorrect single "Indian Outlaw." The artist's hits usually fall into two categories--rockin' country rave-ups, and tender ballads. The best are collected here: the reach-for-the-Kleenex weeper "Don't Take the Girl," the goofy Mexicana of "Refried Dreams," the rowdy live favorites "Down on the Farm" and "I Like It, I Love It," and the sensuous, slow-burning "It's Your Love," one of two duets with McGraw's wife, Faith Hill. McGraw's later sin...

Greatest Hits Volume II by Alan Jackson

Greatest Hits Volume II by Alan Jackson

Initial pressings of GREATEST HITS VOLUME 2 included a bonus CD. Personnel: Alan Jackson (vocals, guitar); Jimmy Buffett (vocals); Bruce Watkins, Greenwood Hart (acoustic guitar); Brent Mason (electric guitar); Paul Franklin, Lloyd Green (steel guitar); Stuart Duncan (mandolin, fiddle); Hargus "Pig" Robbins (piano); Glenn Worf (electric bass); Eddie Bayers (drums); Eric Darken (percussion); John Wesley Ryles (background vocals). Recorded at Emerald Entertainment's Tracking Room, The Sound Station, East Iris, Nashville, Tennessee; Shrimpboat Sound, Key West, Florida; McClear Digital, Toronto, Canada. "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Country Song. The song was also nominated for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. Anyone who earns a second volume of GREATEST HITS has obviously learned a thing or two about staying power and consistency of artistic vision. Such is the case with Alan Jackson, who appeared in the 1990s as mainstream country's alternative to the dominance of ...

Greatest Hits by George Strait

Greatest Hits by George Strait

It's impossible to underestimate how important George Strait was to country music in the mid-1980s. He's credited with single-handedly saving the entire genre from extinction after URBAN COWBOY-era over-saturation and a too-close flirtation with mainstream pop. Listening to the 10 songs gathered on 1986's GREATEST HITS, it's easy to understand the no-nonsense Texan's appeal: any one of these songs, the majority of them written by seasoned Music Row professionals, could have been a hit in the '60s for Ray Price, or in the '70s for George Jones, or in the '50s for Lefty Frizell. Tunes such as the timeless "Amarillo By Morning" or Strait's first Number One country hit "Fool-Hearted Memory" are conservative without being musty or overly retro. The traditional twang is there, with weepy pedal steel guitars, honky-tonk piano and old-fashioned countrypolitan strings providing a perfect Nashville-style setting for Strait's smooth, easy-going delivery. This is as country as country got in the '80s, and this selec...
