The Next What's Next by Hot Water Music

The Next What's Next by Hot Water Music

Hot Water Music: Jason Black, Chuck Ragan, Chris Wollard. Melodic neo-punk outfit Hot Water Music delivers another tightly constructed album of hard-hitting fare with THE NEW WHAT NEXT. Like 2002's CAUTION, THE NEW WHAT NEXT packs a massive sonic wallop, abetted by a crisp, high-sheen production that lets the group's surging power chords, ringing guitar leads, and jackhammer rhythms come through loud and clear. While the muscle and aggression of Hot Water Music's approach gives a clear nod to classic punk, the band is never shambolic or flip; their lock-sealed chemistry betrays years of practice and meticulous construction. The band also incorporates elements of punk-pop (a la the Descendents and Green Day), indie rock (see the moody, appeggiated verses of "This Early Grave"), and nu-metal (in their anthemic choruses and epic, stadium-tailored sound). Whether pummeling listeners with blistering, pulse-accelerating rockers ("Giver"), or buoying them along on chugging, mid-tempo numbers ("Bottomless Seas")...

Avenged Sevenfold by Avenged Sevenfold

Avenged Sevenfold by Avenged Sevenfold

Avenged Sevenfold: M. Shadows (vocals); Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance (guitar); Johnny Christ (bass guitar); The Rev. (drums). After solidly establishing themselves on the contemporary heavy music scene, Avenged Sevenfold wasted little time with following up their 2005 break-through effort, CITY OF EVIL. The band took a bold step on their fourth and self-titled full-length, opting to produce it themselves--a risky task indeed for such a young band. Right out of the gate, Singer M. Shadows leads A7X even further into melodic territory--but not without a little help. Lending her vocal support to the slow-grooving "Gunslinger" and the heavy country rocker "Dear God" and taking a solo turn on "(Unbound) The Wild Ride" is Nashville implant Shanna Crooks. A7X explore dramatic power metal in the epic "A Little Piece Of Heaven," while first single "Critical Acclaim" cuts close for what has become the group's signature sound. Nonetheless, it is on this self-titled set that the band sets its sights on the mainst...

Tell All Your Friends by Taking Back Sunday

Tell All Your Friends by Taking Back Sunday

Talking Back Sunday: Ed Reyes, Mark O'Connell, Shaun Cooper, John Nolan, Adam Lazzara. Engineers: Erin Farley, Tim Gilles, Arun Venkatesh. Long Island emo crew Taking Back Sunday are an authentic grass-roots phenomenon. They built their following from the ground up, by touring with the likes of the Alkaline Trio and At The Drive-In, and while it took their debut album TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS the better part of a year to make its way into the Billboard charts, it did so without the benefit of major-label backing. In classic emo fashion, TBS mixes punk energy, pop smarts, and a whole lot of youthful angst. While there are blazing guitars and light-speed drums aplenty to be found here, things never get overbearing. The addition of clever production touches like the female vocal descant on "Bike Scene" and the atmospheric guitar and keyboard intros to some of the more frenetic tunes shows that there's more to Taking Back Sunday than fire and fury.

They're Only Chasing Safety: Deluxe Edition by Underoath

They're Only Chasing Safety: Deluxe Edition by Underoath

This Deluxe version includes video footage of the band. Underoath: Spencer Chamberlain (vocals); James Smith, Timothy McTague (guitar); Christopher Dudley (keyboards); Grant Brandell (bass guitar); Aaron Gillespie (drums, background vocals). Recording information: Glow In The Dark, Atlanta, GA (2004). Any listener still under the impression that Christian music is strictly light and positive need only listen to a few moments of Underoath's THEY'RE ONLY CHASING SAFETY before realizing that the Lord works in mysterious, and in this case, uncompromisingly rocked-out, ways. The first and most obvious clue that indicates a break with the original CCM soft-pop sound is frontman Spencer Chamberlain's throat-shredding vocal style. With most lyrics emitted in a manner more reminiscent of Morbid Angel than Margaret Becker, the singer makes even Christian-metal masters Pillar and P.O.D. sound tame in comparison. The remaining members of Underoath deal in powerfully direct emo-core, replete with dissonant guitar cho...

Underclass Hero * by Sum 41

Underclass Hero * by Sum 41

Sum 41: Deryck Whibley (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards); CONE (bass guitar); Stevo (drums, percussion). Recording information: Ocean Way, Hollywood, California. Prior to 2007's UNDERCLASS HERO, Sum 41's studio follow-up to the well-received CHUCK, the Canadian punk-pop band weathered the departure of longtime guitarist Dave Baksh. The resultant streamlined sound suits the trio well, with frontman Deryck Whibley--fresh off of a stint producing tracks on Avril Lavigne's THE NEXT BEST THING--balancing melody with punk-inspired aggression, as best revealed on the title song, which comes across like the na?ve younger sibling of Fugazi's anti-establishment anthem "Merchandise." Other revved-up tunes, most notably the propulsive "March of the Dogs," point to the act's apparent aspiration to become a pop-friendly version of Rancid, making Sum 41 the bad-boy group of choice for sensitive kids not willing to hop on the emo bandwagon.

The Artist in the Ambulance by Thrice

The Artist in the Ambulance by Thrice

Thrice: Dustin Kensrue (vocals); Teppei Teranishi (guitar); Eddie Breckenridge (bass); Riley Breckenridge (drums). Additional personnel: Charlie Barnett (arranger, conductor); Chris Shieh (violin); Osman Kivrak (viola); Mario Bothello (cello); Greg Watkins (bass). Recorded at Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York; Salad Days, Beltsville, Maryland and Phase Studios, College Park, Maryland. On THE ARTIST IN THE AMBULANCE, alternative rock/emo-core combo THRICE lays down an unflaggingly intense set of melodically sharp, lyrically ambitious post-hardcore. Highlighted by the emotionally apocalyptic Active Rock radio chart-topping smash "All That's Left," the album stands head and shoulders above contemporary efforts by virtue of vocalist Dustin Keane's poetic lyrics, which often aspire to the exquisitely crafted, heart-tugging efforts of melancholy masters like Bob Mould or even Joni Mitchell. Musically, the group eschews the simple three-chord jams of other pop-punk hitmakers in favor of a multi-textured ...

The Warrior's Code by Dropkick Murphys

Dropkick Murphys: Marc Orrell (vocals, guitar, accordion); James Lynch (vocals, guitar); Ken Casey (vocals, bass guitar); Matt Kelly (vocals, drums, bodhran); Al Barr (vocals); Tim Brennan (acoustic guitar, mandolin, whistle, accordion); Scruffy Wallace (bagpipe). Additional personnel: Laura Casey (viola, cello); Peter Chase, Bill Janovitz, Bronson Arroyo, Lenny Dinardo, Johnny Damon, Dr. Charles Steinberg, Jeff Horrigan, Mark Rogoff, Sara Stevenson, Julie Cordeiro (background vocals). Recording information: Q Division, Somerville, Massachussets; The Outpost, Stoughton, Massachusetts (2004 - 2005). Like The Pogues before them, the Dropkick Murphys successfully combine traditional Irish music, (lusty, barroom choruses plus accordion and bagpipes) and punk rock (choppy guitar riffs, speedy drumming) into the kind of Celt-punk that's at the heart of their fifth album, THE WARRIOR'S CODE. Amid the folkie "Captain Kelly's Kitchen" and "I'm Shipping Up to Boston," (based around previously unreleased Woody Guth...

Additional personnel: Travis Werts (Flugalhorn); Tyler Jones (trumpet); Iki Levy (percussion, samples); Ryland Steen (percussion); Nic Tenbroek, Gordie Johnson. Producers: Aaron Barrett, Scott Klopfenstein, Gordie Johnson. Recorded at Sound Factory, Paramount Studios, Grand Masters, Hollywood, California, Jake's Place, Studio City, California, Brando's Paradise, San Gabriel, California and World Class Audio, Anaheim, California. Formed in Southern California in the early '90s, Reel Big Fish has slowly gathered a massive following by virtue of a combination of relentless touring and relentlessly peppy albums, following in the wake of such erstwhile ska/punk bands as No Doubt. While Reel Big Fish lack a front person with the obvious charms of Gwen Stefani, they plough an irresistible Bare Naked Ladies-t...
