Radio Ethiopia [Remaster] by Patti Smith Group

Radio Ethiopia [Remaster] by Patti Smith Group

Patti Smith Group: Patti Smith (vocals, guitar); Lenny Kaye (guitar, bass, background vocals); Ivan Kral (guitar, bass); Richard Sohl (keyboards, synthesizer); Jay Dee Daugherty (drums, percussion). Engineers: Jay Messina, Brian Sperber. Recorded at The Record Plant East, New York, New York. 1976's RADIO ETHIOPIA, the follow-up to HORSES, turned out to be both more conventional in some ways and more challenging in others. A deciding factor was Jack 'Aerosmith' Douglas replacement of John Cale as producer--the songs were more succinct (for the most part) this time around. The group continued to strive for the perfect balance between thought-provoking poetry and rough rock n' roll, and while RADIO ETHIOPIA contains it's share of highlights, many Smith fans consider it a transitional album not quite up to par with either HORSES or EASTER. The opening "Ask the Angels" was perhaps The Patti Smith Group's most straight-ahead rocker up to that point, while the exploratory reggae-tinged "Ain't It Strange" would ...

The Clash (1st LP) (Us Version) [Remaster] by The Clash

The Clash (1st LP) (Us Version) [Remaster] by The Clash

Also available in a 3-pack with LONDON CALLING and COMBAT ROCK. The Clash: Joe Strummer, Mick Jones (vocals, guitar); Paul Simonon (bass); Tory Crimes, Nicky Headon (drums). Producers: Mickey Foote, Lee Perry, The Clash, Bill Price. Digitally remastered by Ray Staff & Bob Whitney (Whitfield Street Studios, London, England). This album introduced the world to The Clash, the only group that was on even footing with The Sex Pistols in U.K. punk rock's early days. The Clash avoided the Pistols' sensationalism, singing instead songs about politics, racism and class warfare. The music's brutal assault, accompanied by Strummer's charismatic vocal style, earned the group attention in its native England, where THE CLASH entered the charts at number 12. This album collects many tracks from the original British release of THE CLASH along with the single "I Fought The Law", and "Complete Control", a song they recorded with legendary Jamaican producer Lee "Scratch" Perry.

Gung Ho by Patti Smith

Gung Ho by Patti Smith

Personnel: Patti Smith (vocals, acoustic guitar); Lenny Kaye, Oliver Ray (acoustic & electric guitars); Jackson Smith, Tom Verlaine (guitar); Kimberly Smith (mandolin); Rebecca Weiner (violin); Skaila Kanga (harp); Ben E. Franklin (penny whistle); Grant Hart (piano, Farfisa organ); Tony Shanahan (keyboards, bass); Jay Dee Daugherty (drums); Michael Stipe, Wade Raley (background vocals). Recorded at Sear Sound, New York, New York. "Glitter In Their Eyes" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Patti Smith was working through grief when she returned from her eight-year recording hiatus to cut GONE AGAIN (1996) and PEACE & NOISE (1997). She was dealing with the deaths of a number of close friends and family members--including husband Fred "Sonic" Smith--within a short time. Having achieved a degree of musical catharsis, Smith teamed with Pixies/Catherine Wheel producer Gil Norton for 2000's sonically gorgeous GUNG HO. Smith reaches beyond her punk roots, incorporating...

Filthy Lucre Live by The Sex Pistols

Filthy Lucre Live by The Sex Pistols

The Sex Pistols: Johnny Rotten (vocals); Steve Jones (guitar); Glen Matlock (bass); Paul Cook (drums). Recorded live at Finsbury Park, London, England in June 1996. With the punk-rock seeds they sowed 20 years earlier finally bursting into the mainstream, the Sex Pistols return to cash in. We don't mean that as a knock; we're quite sure, in fact, that's exactly what the Pistols themselves would tell you if you asked. And besides, this document of their 1996 London show (released barely a month after the actual gig) finds the Pistols' original intensity undiminished. Playing all the songs that made them infamous, Johnny Rotten (nee Lydon) and company actually sound more aggressive and driving than they did in their '70s heyday. They're a million miles (and a few singing lessons) from the Las Vegas punk nostalgia act some feared. On classics like "Holidays In The Sun", "Pretty Vacant" and "Anarchy In The UK," the Pistols lay it down with an authority that leaves no doubt as to the authenticity of their reu...

Greatest Hits Live by The Ramones

Greatest Hits Live by The Ramones

The Ramones: Joey Ramone (vocals); Johnny Ramone (guitar); C.J. Ramone (bass); Marky Ramone (drums). Engineers include: Ed Stasium, Ian Bryan, Daniel Rey. Recorded live at the Academy, New York, New York on February 29, 1996 and at Baby Monster Studios, New York, New York. To coincide with their appearance as part of the Lollapallooza '96 festival tour (alongside the likes of Rancid, Soundgarden, and Metallica), the Ramones issued their third live album, GREATEST HITS LIVE. The group was nearing the end of a mammoth "farewell tour," (they'd done several of these already) but although they were in the twilight of their career, nobody could lay down such an enjoyable, three-chord racket like the Ramones. As the title says, just their best tracks make the cut--featured are super-charged versions of classics like "Blitzkrieg Bop," "Do You Remember Rock N' Roll Radio," "I Wanna Be Sedated," and "Rockaway Beach." While it may not be as stupendous as their original live set, 1979's IT'S ALIVE, 1996's GREATEST H...

Guitar and Drum by Stiff Little Fingers

Guitar and Drum by Stiff Little Fingers

Stiff Little Fingers: Jake Burns (vocals, guitar); Ian McCallum (guitar, background vocals); Bruce Foxton (bass guitar, background vocals); Steve Grantley (drums, percussion). Recording information: 2004. Long before Green Day or Blink 182, there was Ireland's Stiff Little Fingers, a fierce 1970s punk band high on energy and pop hooks. Despite many ups and downs, Stiff Little Fingers are still going strong on 2003's GUITAR AND DRUM, successfully mining the punchy, melodic punk they helped pioneer all those decades ago. The group still delivers loud and fast, though some of the edges have been filed down a bit (it's hard to imagine the dreamy jangle-pop of "Dead Man Walking" appearing on a record like 1979's INFLAMMABLE MATERIAL). Also, their accessible songcraft is more pronounced than ever--complete with sing-along choruses and riffs ready for hard-rock air-guitar playing. There is a vague Celtic vibe to "Achilles' Heart" and a deep reggae influence on "Be True to Yourself." But this is not to say that ...

Punk Goes Acoustic 2

Punk Goes Acoustic 2

The ever-changing nature of punk rock is reflected in the second volume of the 21st-century punk label Fearless Records' PUNK GOES ACOUSTIC compilation, which features a wide range of sensitive songs mostly centered on teens in various stages of emotional turmoil. Jack's Mannequin's "Bruised" displays its ready-for-prime-time credentials with an aching vocal and chiming piano, and +44's "Baby Come On" wears its small-town blues on its sleeve, but it's left up to Anti-Flag, with its lone acoustic guitar and sneer, to keep the flag of disaffected youth flying on the mutinous "Welcome to 1984."

Kick Out the Jams by MC5

Kick Out the Jams by MC5

MC 5: Rob Tyner (vocals); Wayne Kramer, Fred "Sonic" Smith (guitar); Michael Davis (bass); Dennis Thompson (drums). Recorded live at Russ Gibb's Grande Ballroom, Detroit, Michigan on Oct. 30 & 31, 1968. Includes liner notes by Rob Tyner. While the Rolling Stones were perhaps the first rock band to merge rock & roll with tales of violent revolution (i.e. their classic "Street Fighting Man"), no one did it as convincingly and as whole-heartedly as Detroit's MC5. Managed by the notorious White Panther Party member John Sinclair, the MC5 rocked with a vengeance that was unparalleled at the time--the band was rewarded years later by being heralded as punk rock originators. Few have been able to top the ferocious intensity of their classic debut, 1969's in-concert KICK OUT THE JAMS. Although the album fared well on the charts, it was surrounded in controversy from the get-go; the record company wanted the group to edit out a vulgarity included in the introduction to the title track. The friction would lead to ...

The Story of the Clash, Volume 1 [Remaster] by The Clash

The Story of the Clash, Volume 1 [Remaster] by The Clash

Producers include: The Clash, Guy Stevens, Mikey Dread, Lee Perry, Sandy Perlman. Includes liner notes by Albert Transom. Digitally remastered by Ray Staff & Bob Whitney (Whitfield Street Studios, London, England). Though not the definitive anthology that the CLASH ON BROADWAY box is, THE STORY OF THE CLASH is an appealing, if confusing, two-disc compilation of the second World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band. Any collection that draws on the early-to-mid-period recordings of the Clash (as this one does) is bound to be worthwhile, and THE STORY OF THE CLASH sweetens the pot by throwing in some relative obscurities, like "Armagideon Time" and "Spanish Bombs" along with classics like "London Calling" and "Career Opportunities." The mildly disconcerting aspect of this set is the lack of chronological or thematic order; songs from all phases of the band's career are thrown together in seemingly random fashion, so this doesn't really function as a history of the band. It does, however, put a whole lot of great Cl...

Nude & Rude: The Best of Iggy Pop by Iggy Pop

Nude & Rude: The Best of Iggy Pop by Iggy Pop

Personnel includes: Iggy Pop (vocals); David Bowie, Kate Pierson (background vocals). The Stooges: Iggy Pop (vocals); Ron Asheton (guitar, bass); James Williamson (guitar); Scott Thurston (keyboards); Dave Alexander (bass); Scott Asheton (drums). Compilation producer: Wendi Cartwright Osborn. Includes liner notes by Iggy Pop. For those unfamiliar with the careening, death-defying life and music of Iggy Pop, NUDE & RUDE provides a concise and potent overview. Opening with tracks from his seminal late '60s outfit, The Stooges, the assault is immediate. "Search & Destroy," "No Fun," and "Gimme Danger" all possess an animalistic power to which many bands aspire but very few achieve. The countless cover versions that have surfaced over the years have only underscored the Stooges' bone-rattling urgency. Iggy's solo career has been more fitful. Beset by various forms of self-abuse, Pop resurfaced in the late '70s with David Bowie (who has produced Pop a number of times). Bowie tossed his pop agenda into Pop's m...

Ramones (1st LP) [Remaster] by The Ramones

Ramones (1st LP) [Remaster] by The Ramones

The Ramones: Joey Ramone (vocals); Johnny Ramone (guitar); Dee Dee Ramone (bass); Tommy Ramone (drums). Producers: Craig Leon, T. Erdelyi, Marty Thau. Reissue producers: Gary Stewart, Bill Inglot. Engineers: Rob Freeman, Jack Malken, Don Hunerburg. Recorded at Plaza Sound, Radio City Music Hall, New York, New York and 914 Studios, Blauvelt, New York. Includes liner notes by Donna Gaines and Arturo Vega. Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch and Bill Inglot (Digiprep). The Ramones' self-titled debut is a justifiably adored album--not just one of the best albums to come out of the initial New York punk explosion of the mid-'70s, but one of the greatest rock and roll albums of all time. RAMONES is one of those rare records where there is not a single weak or out-of-place song. Changeups like the bubblegummy near-ballad "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" and the uncharacteristically harsh "53rd and 3rd" (an unsentimental song about Dee Dee Ramone's days as a teenage hustler) vary the album's sound and mood more than i...

The Best of Siouxsie & The Banshees [Limited] by Siouxsie & The Banshees

The Best of Siouxsie & The Banshees [Limited] by Siouxsie & The Banshees

Siouxsie & The Banshees: Siouxsie (vocals); John McKay (guitar); Steven Severin (bass); Kenny Morris (drums). Includes liner notes by Mark Paytress. Part of the infamous "Bromley contingent" of late-1970s UK punk, Siouxsie & the Banshees co-founders Siouxsie Sioux and Steve Severin went far beyond punk's three-chord roots in their decades with the group. The Banshees developed a highly textured sound and gloomy-yet-flamboyant look that helped define the goth subgenre, going on to incorporate world-music and cabaret influences for a unique aesthetic that was boldly exemplified by the unmistakable singing and charismatic presence of Siouxsie. Although this BEST OF lacks a chronological order, the 15-song compilation does offer up an excellent representation of the Banshees' studio output (including a previously unreleased 2002 track, "Dizzy"). Highlights are the surging goth-dance classic "Cities in Dust," the frenetic "Spellbound," and the group's gauzy take on the Beatles' "Dear Prudence" (which features...
